The Origin Viewer is a freely distributed, standalone application that allows viewing and copying of information contained in Origin Project (OPJ) files on computers that do not have Origin installed.
The basis of the Origin Viewer is a software component called Orglab, which is a free COM dll that provides an API to create Origin OPJ files. By using this component to programmatically create Origin OPJ files, any software developer can now have their own applications save data in the OPJ format. A key benefit of using the OPJ file format is that it has a hierarchical structure that also supports meta data.
For more information and to find sample code for reading and writing OPJ files, please refer to the Readme.TXT document accessible from the Help menu of the Viewer application.
Download the Origin Viewer here.
The Origin Viewer can be installed on any computer running Windows XP/2000. The file is approximately 4.3 MB.
Note: The Origin Viewer has not yet been updated to take advantage of all Origin and OriginPro 8's new workbook features. However, the Origin Viewer will be able to display graphs in Origin and OriginPro 8 project files (OPJs).
When used to view Origin 8 OPJ files, certain new feature aspects will not work in the viewer, such as:
- Report sheets will not display correctly
- Embedded tables in graphs will not be displayed
- Parameter rows in worksheet headers will not display
Origin Viewer FAQs
- Q: Is the Origin Viewer free?
A: Yes.
- Q: What parts of an Origin Project (OPJ) does the Origin Viewer let me see?
A: You can view the entire contents of an OPJ in the Origin Viewer. This includes worksheet and matrix data, graphs and layout pages, analysis results that were outputted to the Results Log, and Notes windows. A left navigation tree displays the information as per the Project Explorer hierarchy of the OPJ.
- Q: Can I access the data from files created with an older version of Origin (e.g. version 5.0)?
A: Yes, the Viewer can read the OPJ format from all versions of Origin. Once the OPJ is loaded, you can navigate to any worksheet and select and copy the data, then paste it wherever you want. Note: Earlier versions of Origin (pre-4.X) created ORG files. These cannot be opened in the Origin Viewer.
- Q: Can I access the graphs or layouts for my own use?
A: Yes. Graphs and Layout pages in the OPJ can be copied and pasted as EMFs into other applications.
- Q: How big is the Origin Viewer, and where can I install it?
A: The Viewer can be installed on any Windows XP/2000 machine. The download file is only 4.3Mb.
- Q: If I wanted to send an OPJ to a colleague who does not have Origin, what is the best way to include the Origin Viewer?
A: Once downloaded and installed, the application files from the Viewer can be sent along with your OPJ to your colleague. You colleague can then copy the application files to the hard drive and run the OriginViewer.exe without having to install the software. Of course, you can always direct your colleague to the download page using the following URL: http://www.originlab.com/viewer. Your colleague can then download and install the Origin Viewer on his/her own.
- Q: Can I install the Origin Viewer on a shared machine and let everyone in my group run it?
A: Yes. The Viewer can run without installation. Simply share the installation folder to expose the OriginViewer.exe file.
- Q: Can I copy the Origin Viewer to a USB stick together with my OPJ files and show them to people even though they haven't installed the Origin Viewer on their machines?
A: Yes, in most cases. This is similar to running the Viewer from a remote drive. More details, including some limitations, are available in the Readme.TXT file accessible from the Help menu of the Viewer application.
